The Ghost of Human Presence
2023
When a photograph is taken, we create a record of a single moment in time. This image then acts as evidence of something or someone’s existence.
Instead of focusing on typical milestones pictured in the average family photo album, Digby focuses on the quieter moments of our life and the surroundings presenting to the viewer how these finer details act as ‘traces of life’, markers of our existence.
The photos convey a notion of time passing, pointing out that not everything is permanent. Shadows fade, waves crash against the shore and flowers wilt – yet life continues in the same cycle. The only thing left to prove that this exact moment occurred, is the photograph.
The Ghost of Human Presence is an alternative photo album featuring photographs, collages, and cyanotypes. Together, these works build a personal visualization of the fragility and solitude of life and death as well as referencing how intertwined human life is with nature.
